Decorative and protective varnish finishing of indoor and outdoor wooden surfaces. Wooden window frames, doors, furniture and interior elements, garden furniture, boats etc.
New or previously varnished wooden surfaces. The varnish is not suitable for wooden and parquet floors and steam rooms
The surface to be varnished must be thoroughly cleaned of any loose or flaking material, wax, silicone, grease, oil, dust and other contaminants. Previously varnished glossy surfaces must be sanded to a matt finish, and all sanding dust must be carefully removed. The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 20%. The recommended surface and air temperature is +5 to +25°C, the recommended varnish temperature is +18 to +25°C, and the relative humidity should be between 40% and 75%. Applying the varnish in direct sunlight, in draughts or at elevated temperatures may cause defects in the finished surface. Varnishing in damp or cold weather is not recommended. Outdoor varnishing should preferably be completed before evening dew forms. New wood with a dense grain structure (oak, beech, etc.) should be cleaned with White Spirit. Rough wood surfaces should be lightly dampened using a water spray. Allow the surface to dry, then sand down the raised wood fibres. Remove all sanding dust thoroughly. For cleaning heavily soiled surfaces, use EasyClean. To remove mould, use Biotol E (Biotol Spray). When applying varnish to a previously varnished surface, test the compatibility of the existing varnish with the new varnish on a small, inconspicuous area. Thoroughly remove any loose or flaking varnish, sand the surface and carefully remove all sanding dust. Previously varnished surfaces do not require priming. Bare wood surfaces should be primed with a mixture of varnish and White Spirit at a ratio of 5:1. For exterior use, the wood must first be treated with Biostop wood preservative primer, followed by priming with diluted varnish.
Stir the varnish thoroughly and carefully before use to avoid the formation of air bubbles. Stir occasionally during application to ensure even distribution of the matting agent and tinting paste. Apply using a brush, varnishing spatula or airless spray equipment. Applying 2–3 coats is recommended. Apply the varnish in continuous, even strokes along the wood grain, working from edge to edge. It is recommended to apply the varnish in the direction of the incoming light and to coat the entire surface in one continuous operation. The number of coats required depends on the porosity of the wood, the application method and the desired wear resistance of the finished surface. Each coat must be completely dry before the next coat is applied. Lightly sand the first coat with fine sandpaper (approximately P150) and carefully remove all sanding dust. When recoating a previously sanded surface, it is recommended to wait 24 hours. Tinted varnish should be used for the first coat only. To colour the wood, Balance coloured wood coating can be used as the first coat. To check the colour, it is recommended to carry out a test application on a small area, as varnish may significantly alter the colour of certain exotic wood species, with a risk of staining. The final colour of the varnished surface depends on the wood species and the number of coats applied. For surfaces subject to heavy wear, hardwood is recommended, as softwood species (spruce, pine, lime, etc.) may deform even after varnishing. During application, maintain consistent air humidity and temperature and ensure good ventilation, while avoiding draughts. In dry, hot rooms, reduce ventilation to prevent the varnish from drying too quickly, which may result in lap marks or a poor-quality varnish film.
Avoid washing the surface or subjecting it to vigorous rubbing until full wear resistance has been achieved. The surface reaches its full wear resistance 2 weeks after varnishing. If cleaning is necessary before this period, use water and, if required, neutral or mildly alkaline cleaning agents (pH 6–8), together with a soft cloth or sponge. Do not use organic solvents, abrasive cleaners, or rough sponges or brushes.
Brush, varnish roller or varnishing spatula. Use high-quality application tools. Before use, the varnish roller, even if new, must be cleaned to remove loose fibres (e.g. using adhesive tape). Application tools must be clean and dry and free from loose bristles or fibres. The brush should have natural or blended bristles.
Wash with White-Spirit after completing work.
