Properties

Natural compound for wood protection.

  • A viscous liquid produced form tree stubs and lower parts of the trunk that are rich in resins.
  • Wood impregnated with tar becomes waterproof.
  • Prevents wood from rotting.
  • Protects wood from cracking and weather impact.
  • Does not dry but is absorbed by the wood, which seems dry to the touch afterwards. The depth of absorption depends on the density of wood and the rate of dilution of the product with turpentine.
  • Has a string distinctive natural smell.
Maximum permissible EU VOC content for the product (subcat. e) 400 g/L. Maximum VOC content in the product <400 g/L.

Purpose

Wooden logs, fences, poles, ropes, wooden roofing parts (laths, roof shakes), pitching boats, etc. treating. Do not use on floors or previously painted or varnished surfaces. For outdoor use.

Types of surfaces

Recommended for untreated and sawn wood.

Quality standards

  • VOC (volatile organic compounds) – content in accordance with the European Union directive 2004/42/CE.
  • Product and service quality is guaranteed by the quality, environmental protection, occupational health and safety management system in accordance with standards ISO 9001:2015; ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007

Surface preparation before  treatment

Wood moisture content must not exceed 20%. Perform application at the temperature above 5 °C and relative humidity up to 80%. Clean the surface thoroughly from dirt, grease and dust. The wood to be treated must not be damaged by mould and algal growth.

Use Aura Biostop primer to pre-treat the surfaces. Clean previously painted surfaces completely, using a scraper, a stiff brush, a heat gun or OPS Pro varnish remover. Remove the darkened areas of the wood with a metal brush, and replace rotten wood.

When surfaces have been treated with tar or tar oil, we recommend using the same product subsequently.

Application

Stir the product before use. To increase absorption when treating hard wood, we recommend diluting the tar with natural turpentine oil Männitärpentin (up to 20% of its volume).

Apply the tar with a stiff brush, rubbing it in thoroughly to make sure that the tar coat has been fully absorbed after which the wood surface will seem dry to the touch. Apply the product evenly from edge to edge along the grain. Take special care to treat the ends. Remove the unabsorbed excess product with a cloth.

We recommend treating surfaces exposed to the weather impact once per year.
When tar from different batches is used on the same surface, the product must be mixed in a single container to ensure that the colour is even.

Tools

Brush.

Tool cleaning

Wash tools with turpentine Männitärpentin after completing work.

Colour

Dark brown

Tinting

Dark brown.

Consumption

Per one coat: 3–5 m²/L for sawn wood; 5-10 m²/L for planed wood.

Drying time

Does not dry but is absorbed by the wood, which seems dry to the touch afterwards.
The depth of absorption depends on the porosity (absorption capacity) of wood and the rate of dilution of the product with turpentine
